Brad photographed a (Western) Banded Snake-Eagle, Circaetus cinerascens, with a meal in its talons during an afternoon birding expedition on August 21, 2012. Our boat left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) and headed to the lagoon and solid ground where we boarded a safari vehicle so we could look for additional species. Snake-eagles have unfeathered legs, yellow eyes, and a round-headed appearance. A single broad dark tail-bar, ashy-brown coloration, and a belly with indistinct barring are characteristics that can aid in IDing the species. Temperatures were close to 90 degrees with clear blue skies.
