During the afternoon of August 23, 2012, after a much needed siesta and some refreshing snacks and tea, we headed out to bird and look for big game on the Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) from Xakanaxa Camp. The African Hoopoe, Upupa africana, is a rufous-brown colored bird with a large crest (usually held closed) tipped in black. The wings are barred black and white. The bill is long and thin and is curved downward. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this clear day with blue skies.
