An adult African Jacana, Actophilornis africanus, is shown here feeding among the reeds. This waterbird has long legs and long toes (see photo) that allow it to walk on floating or semi-submerged vegetation. The body is a chestnut color. The white face, neck and throat are highlighted with a black line extending from the base of the bill through the eye, over the head and down the nape. The bill and frontal shield are bluish. We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) the morning of August 21, 2012, by boat and were birding the floodplains and islands in the area. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this clear day with blue skies.
