Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, we went birding on the Moremi Game Reserve with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle. Brad photographed an African Spoonbill (Platalea alba) as it stood at the edge of a waterhole about an hour before sunset. The bird uses its spoon or spatulate shaped bill held in a partially opened position to feed below the surface of the water by moving it in a sideways or back-and-forth motion. The legs, bill, and face are pink. Temperatures were in the low 90's.
