The African Darter (a.k.a. Anhinga), Anhinga rufa, shown here perched on a submerged tree stump is drying its wings while a hippopotamus surfaces in the water below it the morning of August 23, 2012. We'd left Xakanaxa Camp just after sunrise via a safari vehicle to bird and look for big game on the Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana). The neck has a thin white lateral stripe that shows against a rufous background color and is long and thin with a characteristic kink in it. The bill is straight. Temperatures were in the low 80's with clear sunny skies.
