We photographed a male Black-backed Puffback (Dryoscopus cubia) while driving in a safari vehicle on our way to Xakanaxa Camp (Maun, Botswana) from the airstrip the afternoon of August 22, 2012. This small pied bird (black and white) has a reddish-orange colored iris, white underparts, and a black head, nape, and back. The male erects its back feathers to form a fluff or puff of white feathers when it is displaying (unfortunately, we didn't see the bird in action). Both sexes have distinctive white wing barring. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this sunny afternoon.
