After a mid-morning brunch on August 22, 2012, we were sitting in the dining/reception area at Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) waiting for a boat to take us to the Nxamaseri landing strip (on terra firma). A Cardinal Woodpecker, Dendropicos fuscenscens, was perched in a nearby tree. Both sexes can be identified by their small size, prominently streaked breasts, black malar streaks, and brown foreheads. Temperatures were in the low 80's.
