Brad took this photograph of a Fan-tailed Widowbird, Euplectes axillaris, perched on a stalk of papyrus the morning of August 21, 2012. We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) by boat and were birding the floodplains and islands in the area. Males are black with red shoulders and a fan-shaped tail. Both immatures and non-breeding males resemble females and are difficult to ID. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
