A herd of African (Cape) Buffalo, Syncerus caffer, crossed in front of our vehicle during a morning birding expedition on August 23, 2012, on the Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana). Cape Buffalo factoids: Competent swimmers with four times the pulling strength of an ox, Cape Buffalo have long memories and have been known to attack people who have harmed them in the past (a buffalo never forgives). Their tongues are smooth and not raspy. The neck on a bull buffalo is two inches thick in places. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with clear blue skies.
