A herd of approximately one-hundred African (Cape) Buffalo, Syncerus caffer, crossed in front of and around our vehicle during a morning birding expedition on August 23, 2012, on the Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana). Both males and females have heavy, ridged horns that grow straight out from the head, turn downward and then turn upward. Males develop a heavy shield across the forecrown. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with clear blue skies.
