Brad took a closeup photograph of an African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) as it stood munching on the bark of several limbs that it tore from a tree the morning of August 23, 2012. We were driving around the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle looking for big game and birds. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this sunny morning with clear skies. Elephants in Xakanaxa tend to be smaller than those in Etosha National Park (Namibia). Their tusks are larger and more pointed. Because of the lack of certain minerals, the tusks on the elephants in Etosha tend to break shortening them and leaving jagged ends.
