Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, we went birding on the Moremi Game Reserve with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle. We were heading for our "sundowner" when terrified Impala ran out of the bush coming at us in all directions. Four African Wild Dogs came loping after them through the tall grass toward us. However, the reason for the dog's activity wasn't the impala but proved to be a young female leopard (Panthera pardus) which they treed in a dead tree not thirty yards from our vehicle. The leopard made herself comfortable in the tree carefully watching the wild dogs who seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, the leopard eased herself out of the tree. That's when the wild dogs came out of no where, and the chase resumed with the leopard being treed a second time. We left the area after it appeared that the leopard wasn't coming down again anytime soon....and sunset was coming on fast. Temperatures were in the low 90's.
