Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, we went birding on the Moremi Game Reserve with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle. Driving around we came upon a sleeping den of lions consisting of a female (the mother), a young male (her son, and half-brother to the cubs), and three, four month old cubs. The ever vigilant male lion, Panthera leo, is shown here amid a swarm of flies. It was frustrating not being able to focus my zoom lens with ease (the effect of all the dust and sand in Etoshia had taken its toll on both our cameras). Temperatures were in the low 90's on this sunny day.
