Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, we went birding on the Moremi Game Reserve with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle. Driving around we came upon a sleeping den of lions consisting of a female (the mother), a young male (her son, and half-brother to the cubs), and three, four month old cubs. Two of the lion cubs, Panthera leo, are shown here. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this sunny day.
