After a light, early morning breakfast on August 24, 2012, at Xakanaxa Camp, we took a safari vehicle for one last birding/big game expedition in Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. Brad photographed a young male (Common) Waterbuck, Kobus ellipsiprymnus ellipsiprymnus, as it peered out of the tall grass at us. The Waterbuck is not truly aquatic or as much at home in the water and swamps as is the Lechwe or Sitatunga. Its long-haired, shaggy brown-gray colored coat emits a smelly, greasy secretion thought to be waterproofing. The Common Waterbuck has a conspicuous white ring encircling its dark rump, while the Defassa Waterbuck, Kobus ellipsiprymnus ellipsiprymnus, has wide white patches on either side of the rump. Temperatures were edging up into the upper 70's on this clear day.
