We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) the morning of August 21, 2012, by boat to bird the floodplains and islands in the area. We were concentrating on locating a Pel's Fishing-Owl (proved to be very uncooperative) on one of the islands when we saw this Sausage Tree, Kigelia pinnata, with a sausage-like fruit hanging down from the tree on long, ropelike stalks. Blood-red flowers bloom at night and are pollinated by bats, insects and sunbirds. These develop into mature sausage shaped fruits that can be up to two feet long and weight up to 15 pounds. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
