We got excellent views of a Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) as it stood in a waterhole in Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) the morning of August 23, 2012. We'd left Xakanaxa Camp just after sunrise via a safari vehicle to bird and look for big game. This species is all-white in coloration with a pink upper mandible and a yellow lower mandible. The area around the eye is pink. In breeding plumage the body takes on a pink flush of color as do the legs, feet, and bill tip. A yellow patch also appears on the upper breast. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with clear sunny skies.
