A Greater Blue-eared Starling, Lamprotornis chalybaeus, was using its strong legs to hang upside down in a tree near our cabana at Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) the morning of August 22, 2012. We had just returned from a birding expedition along the main channel and were delighted to find a lot of bird activity right in our 'own backyard'. It is one of three short-tailed and similar glossy starlings along with the Miombo Blue-eared and the Cape Starling. The Greater Blue-eared has a broad blackish-colored eye-stripe and ear-patch. The belly and flanks are a royal-blue. Two rows of variable black spots are found on the wing coverts. After photographing several other species, it was a mad dash to pack our things and get ready to head to the airport (by boat) for a flight to Xakanaxa Lodge in Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve. Temperatures were in the low 70's.
