A Greater-Painted Snipe (Rostratula benghalensis) was standing near the edge of a waterhole almost hidden in the tall grass in Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) the morning of August 23, 2012. We'd left Xakanaxa Camp just after sunrise via a safari vehicle to bird and look for big game. The male, shown here, is identified by the white patches surrounding the eyes and a distinctively curved white band extending from the breast up and over the shoulder and onto the back. An intricate pattern of white, brown, black, and tan covers the wings. Underparts are white. Legs are an olive-yellow color. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with clear sunny skies.
