During the late afternoon of August 21, 2012, we left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) by boat and headed to the lagoon and solid ground where we boarded a safari vehicle to look for additional species. The Hamerkop, Scopus umbretta, is a dull brown-colored, long-legged, freshwater bird that has no close relatives. The black bill is heavy and conical. Its large, backward projecting crest (see photo) is distinctive. Hamerkops build enormous, domed-shape stick nests that contain several chambers. Both parents take part in incubating the eggs and caring for their young. Temperatures were close to 90 degrees with clear blue skies.
