Brad photographed this Long-toed Lapwing, Vanellus crassirostris, during an afternoon birding expedition on August 21, 2012. Our boat left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) and headed to the lagoon where we boarded a safari vehicle so we could look for additional species. The forecrown, face, neck, upper breast, and belly are white, while the rest of the crown, nape, and breast are black giving this species a pied appearance. The red bill is tipped in black. The Long-toed Lapwing has long red legs with long toes adapted for walking on floating vegetation. Temperatures were close to 90 degrees with clear blue skies.
