During the late afternoon of August 21, 2012, we left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) by boat and headed to the lagoon and solid ground where we boarded a safari vehicle to look for additional species. This closeup view of a Long-toed Lapwing, Vanellus crassirostris, shows all the characteristics of the species. The hindneck and chest are black while the lower back is grayish. Underparts and face are white. The black-tipped red bill, red legs and eye-ring are prominent features of this young bird. Temperatures were in the upper 80's with clear blue skies.
