Brad took a side view photograph of a Malachite Kingfisher, Corythornis (Alcedo) cristata, perched on a phragmites (common reed), Phragmites australis, stalk the morning of August 21, 2012. We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) by boat and were birding the floodplains and islands in the area. This colorful bird has a heavy reddish-orange bill, white underparts, and orange cheeks, sides, and legs. Upperparts are a bright metallic blue. White patches are found on the throat and behind the cheek. The bird's short crest of black and blue feathers is visible here. A low perching river kingfisher, it is distributed in African south of the Sahara. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
