One can never have too many shots of the Malachite Kingfisher, Corythornis (Alcedo) cristata. This photograph shows the bird's upperparts as it perched on a phragmites (common reed), Phragmites australis, stalk late in the morning of August 21, 2012. We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) by boat and were birding the floodplains and islands in the area. This colorful bird has a heavy reddish-orange bill, white underparts, and orange cheeks, sides, and legs. Upperparts are a bright metallic blue. White patches are found on the throat and behind the cheek. A low perching river kingfisher, it is distributed in African south of the Sahara. The weather was warm with temperatures in the mid-80's and clear blue skies.
