Brad took this closeup of a Malachite Kingfisher, Alcedo cristata, that was perched on a branch in a swampy area of Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) the morning of August 23, 2012. Its dagger-like red bill, turquoise and blackish-green streaked cap that reaches down to its eyes, rufous and white underparts, and bright metallic blue upperparts are nicely shown in this photograph. Temperatures were edging upward toward the high 80's with clear blue skies.
