Brad took this photograph of a Pied Kingfisher, Ceryle rudis, from the open dining/reception area at Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) during the afternoon of August 20, 2012. The pied black and white patterning on the bird's wings and upperparts is shown in this view. Other characteristics include a long, dark, dagger-like bill, and short legs. This individual perched on the dock and then plunged into the water to successfully catch a fish. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this clear day with blue skies.
