A Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is shown perched atop a tall tree early in the morning on August 23, 2012. We were in a safari vehicle heading out from Xakanaxa Camp (Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana) for a morning of birding. This heron's thin, pointed bill, striped neck, and purplish hue were highlighted by the morning sunlight. Temperatures were in the upper 60's with clear skies.
