During the afternoon of August 23, 2012, after a much needed siesta and some refreshing snacks and tea, we headed out to bird and look for big game on the Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) from Xakanaxa Camp. A pair of Red-billed Oxpeckers, Buphagus erythrorhynchus, is shown here perched atop a Kudu. Oxpeckers feed on blood, mucus, ticks, and bloodsucking flies. The Red-billed Oxpecker has an all-red colored bill and a large yellow eye-wattle. Upperparts are dark brown, and underparts are light brown. It lacks a pale rump. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this clear day with blue skies.
