It was still dark the morning of August 22, 2012, when we left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) by boat for our last birding expedition there. The Rufous-bellied Heron, Ardeola rufiventris, was one of the first birds that we photographed. The wings and belly are a maroon color. This adult's upper mandible is gray, while the lower mandible, facial skin, and legs are yellow. Temperatures were in the upper 60's.
