Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, we took a safari vehicle with our group and guides (VENT and local) to go birding on the Moremi Game Reserve. Brad photographed this Saddle-billed Stork, Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis, as it spread its wings nicely showing the upper wing pattern and coloration. The male, shown here, has a small yellow side wattle and a reddish iris. The bill is red and black with a yellow-colored saddle. The head, neck, mantle, and wings are black, while the nape and underparts are white. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this sunny day. A Gray Heron is next to the base of the tree.
