Brad photographed this Squacco Heron, Ardeola ralloides, the morning of August 21, 2012. We'd left Nxamaseri Lodge (Botswana) by boat and were birding the floodplains and islands in the area. Perching alongside the water, this heron was in non-breeding plumage with its pale brownish upperparts, finely streaked head, neck, and nape, and white underparts. It appears to be all-white when in flight. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
