During the late afternoon of August 21, 2012, we left Nxamaseri Island Lodge (Maun, Botswana) by boat and headed to the lagoon and solid ground where we boarded a safari vehicle to look for additional species. Brad photographed a Water Thick-Knee, Burhinus vermiculatus, standing near the lagoon. Nocturnal and crepuscular, this species spends the day resting and was just becoming active near sunset. Its large head and eyes, and long legs along with its distinct black edged gray wing-bar make this species fairly easy to ID. The term "thick-knee" is a misnomer because the joint referred to is not the knee but the tibio-tarsal joint, a bird's equivalent of an ankle joint. Temperatures were in the upper 80's with clear blue skies.
