Brad photographed this African Barred Owlet as it perched in a tree near a marshy area in Bagani Mahangu Game Reserve in Namibia the afternoon of August 19, 2012. We had stopped for a picnic lunch and were kept busy photographing the various species feeding in the area. The African Barred Owlet, Glaucidium capense, has finely barred upperparts. Its wings have a row of bold white spots reaching from the rump to the shoulder. Underparts are white with rows of brown spots. This tiny, short-tailed owl (known as an owlet) appears large-headed and dumpy. So cute!! Temperatures were in the 90's on this clear day.
