Brad took this photograph of an African Hoopoe, Upupa africana, during a morning birding trip on August 14, 2012. We were walking along the banks of the dry Huab River bed when we saw this bird perched near a Pearl-spotted Owlet. The Hoopoe's crest, which is normally kept flat and forms a point behind the head, was raised (in response to the presence of the Owlet). This male has a large white wing patch. The head, back, and underparts are bright chestnut. The wings are barred black and white, the tail is black with white at the base, and the bill is long and slightly decurved. Temperatures were in the upper 50's on this clear morning.
