Brad photographed this Blacksmith Plover (Lapwing), Vanellus armatus, while birding a waterhole in the vicinity of Okaukuejo Camp in Etosha National Park (Namibia) during the afternoon of August 15, 2012. This pied plover has gray wings and mantle. The crown and forecrown are white as are the nape and belly. The remainder of the bird is black. Lapwings are long-legged terrestrial birds that breed during the winter season. Temperatures were in the upper 60's with partly cloudy skies.
