We drove through Bagani Mahangu Game Reserve in Namibia the afternoon of August 19, 2012, to enter into Botswana at the Muhembo Border Post. A Brown Firefinch, Lagonosticta nitidula, was foraging in a mat of tangled grass. The face, throat, and upper breast area are reddish. Upperparts are brownish. White spotting is visible on the sides of the breast. This species lacks a red rump. Sexes are similar. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this clear day.
