We drove back to Klein Okevi Waterhole after breakfast at Namutoni Camp on August 18, 2012. This Burchell's Sandgrouse (Pterocles burchelli) was soaking its feathers in the waterhole (to absorb water to take back to its chicks at the nest). The male's face, ear coverts, and throat are gray. Ocher coloration with heavy white spotting identifies this species from other sandgrouse. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this clear day.
