After breakfast on August 13, 2012, we boarded a safari vehicle and drove the dry Huab River bed. The Cape Turtle-Dove, Streptopelia capicola, was one of the birds that we photographed. The head is a sooty-gray color with a narrow black nuchal collar. The eye is black, and no eye-ring is present. The mantle and wing coverts are grayish. White outer tail feathers are visible when the bird is in flight. Temperatures were in the high 80's on this clear, breezy morning.
