We were up early and out birding around Huab before breakfast on August 14, 2012. This photograph shows a frontal-view of a Crowned Lapwing, Vanellus coronatus. This species has a distinctive white crown or ring around the top of the head between a black cap and a second black ring. The black-tipped bill is bright red as are the legs. Upperparts, neck, and chest are brownish, and the belly is white. The iris is a pale yellow color. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this clear morning with blue skies.
