This photograph shows an African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) using its tusk and tongue to pull leaves off of some thornbush. We were birding in the vicinity of Okaukuejo Camp in Etosha National Park (Namibia) during the afternoon of August 15, 2012. The area we were in had a lot of Mopani, Acacia, and Leadwood Trees. The elephants in Etosha are the tallest in Africa. However, because of mineral deficiencies in their diet, they have the shortest tusks. Temperatures were in the lower 60's with partly cloudy skies.
