After dinner on August 15, 2012, we walked from our room to the permanent waterhole at Okaukuejo Camp in Etosha National Park (Namibia). It was a short walk, and Brad and I enjoyed the cool weather and looking at the star-filled sky. This photograph shows two Black (Hook-lipped) Rhinoceroses (Diceros bicomis) that came in to drink at the waterhole. Overhead mercury and/or sodium floodlights illuminate the waterhole and give photographs a yellowish-orange color. The Black Rhinoceros is native to eastern and central Africa and is slate-gray in color. However, when covered with dry mud, its color can vary from white, light gray, reddish to black. Named for its hooked lip, this species has a poor sense of sight but an acute sense of smell. The black rhino is smaller than the white rhino and has a smaller head which it holds in a horizontal orientation. Temperatures were in the 50's on this cool evening.
