Brad photographed a Black (Hook-lipped) Rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis, as it was moving across the grassland in Etosha National Park (Namibia) near Halali Camp, our next over-night stop. When covered with dry mud, this slate-gray rhinoceros' color can vary from white, light gray, reddish to black. Named for its hooked lip, this species has a poor sense of sight but an acute sense of smell. The black rhino is smaller than the white rhino and has a smaller head which it holds in a horizontal orientation. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this late afternoon of August 16, 2012.
