Brad photographed this Black-backed Jackal, Canis mesomelas, walking in the grassland near the waterhole at Okondeka in Etosha National Park (Namibia) during the morning of August 16, 2012. Also known as the Silver-backed jackal, this animal's habitat includes open woodlands, savanna, and bush. They typically live in pairs and team up when hunting for impala or antelope. Upperparts have black fur, and underparts and chest are white. The rest of the body is covered with fur that varies from a reddish-brown to a ginger color. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with partly cloudy skies.
