After lunch followed by a siesta on August 14, 2012, Brad and I walked to the Huab reception/dining area where we boarded our safari vehicle for late afternoon birding. The Cape Rock Hyrax (Dassie), Procavia capensis, was one of the animals we photographed as it sat watching us from high atop a rocky outcrop. A medium sized terrestrial mammal, it is closely related to the elephant. A sentry, such as this individual, will take up a position to watch for predators, sound an alarm, and then hide among the rock crevasses. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this clear day.
