Brad photographed this Common (Burchell's) Zebra (Equus quagga burchelli) while we were on a drive to the waterhole at Okondeka in Etosha National Park (Namibia) during the morning of August 16, 2012. This is a beautiful specimen of the species. Burchell's are plains zebras, and the subspecies Equus quagga burchelli exists in KwaZulu-Natal and in Etosha. Characteristics of the Common Zebra include: (a) prominent body stripes with stripes on the legs fading further down the leg to none at all, (b) stripes reach around to the underbelly, (c) has shadow stripes (lighter stripes between prominent dark stripes), and (d) hindquarter stripes lead straight into the tail. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with partly cloudy skies.
