Before starting out on our early morning birding trip on August 14, 2012, everyone made a quick stop to look at this group of Common Slit-faced Bats, Nycterus thebiaca, that were on their night roost hanging from the rafters just outside the ladies room in the main reception/dining area. Believe me when I say these bats weren't any more awake than I was...even after several cups of coffee. This common species is found throughout most of Africa. Upperparts are a light brown color, and underparts are a creamy white. Large, conspicuous ears are evident on this medium-sized bat which gets its name from the distinctive slit which runs down the center of its face from its eyes to its snout. Temperatures were in the upper 50's.
