After breakfast on August 13, 2012, our group boarded a safari vehicle and drove along the dry Huab River bed until lunchtime. A herd of Greater Kudu, Tragelaphus strepsiceros, was climbing through a shrub covered hillside near the river bed when we took this photo. This woodland antelope is found throughout eastern and southern Africa. The spiral shaped horns are found in males. Between the ages of 6 to 12 months males will start to grow horns. By two years of age, their horns have twisted around once and will reach a full two and a half twists by six years of age (three full turns have been observed). Coat color ranges from a brown-bluish-gray to reddish-brown. Four to twelve vertical white stripes are found on the torso. Temperatures were in the high 80's on this clear, breezy morning.
