Brad photographed a Roan Antelope, Hippotragus equinus, while we were driving through Bagani Mahangu Game Reserve in Namibia the morning of August 19, 2012. The Roan, a savanna antelope, is one of Africa's largest bovids. This side-view shows the Roan's erect mane that runs from between its ears to just beyond the shoulders. Massive, heavily-ringed horns (shorter in females) curve back away from the head. The color of the upperparts varies from gray to tawny to reddish depending on location. Underparts are lighter. Ears are long and narrow and tipped with a tassel of hair. Black and white facial markings give the face a 'masked' appearance. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this clear day.
