After breakfast on August 13, 2012, our group boarded a safari vehicle and drove along the dry Huab River bed until lunchtime. A Southern Oryx (Gemsbok), Oryx gazella, was walking in the grassland near the river bed when we took its photo. This large, heavily built antelope has long rapier-shaped horns. Black and white facial and leg markings are distinctive. Underparts are whitish and are separated from the fawn-gray colored upperparts by a black stripe along the animal's side. Typically found in arid and semi-arid open grassland, scrub, and open woodland, Gemsbok have the ability to go for extended periods without water. Temperatures were in the high 80's on this clear, breezy morning.
