After breakfast on August 13, 2012, our group boarded a safari vehicle and drove along the dry Huab River bed until lunchtime. A male Southern Oryx (Gemsbok), Oryx gazella, was walking in the boulder-strewn grassland near the river bed when we took its photo. This large, heavily built antelope has long rapier-shaped horns. The male's horns are shorter and more substantial than the female's. Black and white facial and leg markings are distinctive. Underparts are whitish and are separated from the fawn-gray colored upperparts by a black stripe along the animal's side. Typically found in arid and semi-arid open grassland, scrub, and open woodland, Gemsbok have the ability to go for extended periods without water. Temperatures were in the low 90's on this clear, breezy afternoon.
